Dog Vaccination Could Help Eliminate Rabies in India

The study analyzed the measures of preventing rabies in the state of Kerala during 2026–2035. According to its results, improving the programs for dog vaccination can significantly affect the protection of communities from this deadly disease.

Rabies is a viral infection that becomes fatal after symptoms occur. In India, there are many incidents of animal bites annually, out of which dogs account for more than three-fourths of all cases.

Mathematical modeling was used by researchers to compare various rabies control programs. One of the most important findings was that vaccinating a considerable percentage of dogs could have an effect.

1. Inoculating 70% of dogs could reduce annual deaths caused by rabies in humans in Kerala almost to zero within about three years.
2. Pre-exposure vaccination of children for rabies was discovered to confer relatively small additional protection at a high price.
3. Shifting resources away from dog inoculation can lead to more human fatalities.
4. Providing timely post-exposure treatment is still very important.
5. The number of stray dogs in Kerala may be much higher than official estimates indicate.
