After years of neglect, nine-year-old rescue dog Jude is learning how to play and enjoy life again. The lurcher has been waiting for a new family for 427 days, and he is starting to enjoy playing with toys and people and having a few short exercises.
Jude was rescued from a site that had no clean water, no bedding, and no electricity. The site posed many dangers to the animals and had unhygienic conditions.
The rescue operation that took place saved Jude and eight other dogs along with some snakes.
Upon reaching the RSPCA’s Leybourne Animal Centre in Kent, Jude had difficulty performing normal activities. He had no idea about toys, lead walking was a challenge for Jude, and he did not respond to his name.
According to Hayley Proud, like the animal care assistants at the center, the team started from square one. They have been treating Jude similar to a pup to help him acclimatize to the world.
Initially, Jude found it difficult to cope with everything that was going on in his life. When he was overwhelmed, he would collapse on the ground. But through patience and persistence in training, Jude has made amazing advancements.
Today he loves to play and socialize with humans. Also, as Proud explained, lurchers do not require hours of exercise every day. They like to run and have many short outings, usually lasting for five to ten minutes.
In order to develop his self–assurance, Jude must have a loving family. An appropriate home would have:
Proud stated that Jude desires companionship and love. A family that supports him could help him lead the life of comfort he deserves.
The experience of Jude emphasizes the emerging problems confronting animal welfare organizations. According to the RSPCA report, on average, 410 multi-animal incidents occur every month in England and Wales this year.
In Kent, 105 multi-animal rescues were reported between January and August. In 2025, it reported 188 such types of rescues.
According to kennel manager Laura Bowbrick, numerous rescued animals come with health issues or behavioural problems. They may need special treatment, effort and time to get back to a new life of normalcy.
There are many reasons behind these cases. These include mental health issues of the owners, an increase in the cost of living, uncontrolled breeding, and neglect of sterilisation.
RSPCA initiated the Adoptober campaign to inspire people to rescue animals. The journey of Jude shows how kindness and patience can restore the confidence of mistreated dogs.
The owner of Jude’s property was convicted of an animal welfare crime. He was also banned from owning any pet for ten years.
Jude has already spent 427 days preparing for adoption. He still needs the warmth of a family through which he can experience security and happiness.
