One of the earliest uses of retrieving puppies was to assist fishers in retrieving fish and objects from the water. In the 19th century, such retrieving puppies were particularly famous with the cod fisheries around Newfoundland. Of those puppies, the most famous breeds were the Labrador (now no longer confused with the prevailing Labrador Retriever) and numerous sizes of Newfoundlands. With the improvement of more superior firearms, hunters were increasingly capable of shooting “at the wing,” however they required a canine to mark the fallen bird and bring it again. The fishery dogs have been unrivaled swimmers and natural retrievers and crosses among them, and British breeds like setters or hints honed the canine’s bird sense. The result was the Wavy-Coated Retriever, and it has become pretty famous in America and England. It was among the earliest breeds to be exhibited at English dog shows. Near the end of the 1800s, crosses with a straighter-haired breed were made because the wavy coat was thought to be much less water repellant. May also have made Crosses to setters and collies of the time. The resulting Flat-Coated Retrievers have become relatively famous. The breed was now no longer identified by the AKC till 1915, by which period it had already begun to drop in recognition. By the end of the Second World War, the quantity of Flat-Coats had diminished because the breed was threatened with extinction. Concerted efforts to bring the species back slowly succeeded. The Flat-Coat now enjoys a modest reputation as a companion and show canine but has no longer regained its field presence.
