Italian Greyhound

“The Italian Greyhound has been around for centuries. The evidences of Exactly how and when this miniaturized Greyhound was developed has been lost in time. Evidence of puppies similar to the Italian Greyhound may be located in art dating almost 2,000 years in the past from Turkey, Greece, and different regions across the Mediterranean. Miniaturized Greyhounds could be found throughout southern Europe by the middle ages. However, they found special favor with Italian courtiers. The breed got here to England in the 17th century, quickly becoming as famous with the Aristocracy there as they had been in their Italian homeland.

In 1820, the Italian Greyhound was one of the only toy breeds referred to in a book about puppies. The Italian Greyhound continued to find favor, achieving its top during the reign of Queen Victoria. After that time, numbers declined, and the breed had diminished to such an extent that it had nearly disappeared in England after World War II. One possible cause for the decline was a degradation in quality because puppies have been bred for the tiny size, often without regard to soundness and health. Fortunately, Italian Greyhounds had come to the USA in the late 1800s. Even though their numbers have been small, they have been of brilliant soundness. Along with other imports, these puppies helped revive the breed in Europe. Since then, the breed has risen in reputation and is now enjoying a second renaissance.”

Temperement

A sighthound in a small package, the Italian Greyhound stocks its large relatives’ characteristics. This canine likes to run and chase; however, it is extraordinarily mild and sensitive. Reserved, often timid, with strangers, the Italian Greyhound is dedicated to its family: good with kids, different dogs, and pets. Care has to be taken, as boisterous kids and large dogs may easily injure this miniature breed. Training is outstanding.

Upkeep

The Italian Greyhound likes an everyday romp outdoors, however, dislikes the cold. Exercise requirements are best met with a very good stroll on a leash or maybe a rollicking game indoors. This canine loves to stretch out and sprint in a securely fenced area. Care of the fine short hair is simple, consisting only of occasional brushing to cast off dead hair. Regular brushing of the teeth is important for this breed to avoid future dental issues.

Health

“Major diagnosis: periodontal disease
Minor diagnosis: epilepsy, leg fractures, patellar luxation, PRA

Suggested tests: knee, hip, eye, thyroid
Life span: 12–15 years
Note: The breed is susceptible to leg and tail fractures. It shares the sighthound sensitivity to barbiturate anesthesia.”
