If you watched the Jack Russell Terrier appear familiar, you’re right — the breed has been made well-known over time as Eddie from the hit TV show “Frazier” and the title character in the PBS program “Wishbone.” Before his TV fame, the Jack Russell Terrier was evolved in the nineteenth century as a fox-looking terrier by the Reverend John Russell. There had been strains of the Russell Terrier: the Jack and the Parson. The Jack Russell Terrier was more miniature with a longer body and shorter legs than the Parson Russell Terrier and was used for hunting vermin and bolt rabbits. Today, the Jack Russell Terrier and Parson Russell Terrier are basically identical breeds. The United Kennel Club identified the previous in 2001, and the American Kennel Club recognized the latter in 1997.

Temperement

The Jack Russell Terrier is a clever, ambitious, and pleasant little dog. He is a fearless, not to say tenacious, hunting terrier bred to visit the ground for work and likes to dig. Intelligent, outgoing, and active, training the Jack Russell Terrier thrives on having a task to channel his strength and is best suitable for home surroundings with a fenced backyard wherein lots of engaging activity and affection may be given. The breed isn’t highly recommended for a house with toddlers, or different puppies or pets for that matter, because of his independence and lack of patience; however, it does well with older children.

Upkeep

All that energy needs to be burned somehow! Because of his high strength, strong hunting drive and general zest for life, the No. 1 challenge in caring for a Jack Russell Terrier is making sure he receives adequate exercise. His activity must take place on a leash or in a fenced backyard to assist withstand his urge to run off on a prey chase. His quick coat, which may be either smooth or broken (rough), needs minimum grooming — ordinary brushing and the occasional bath are commonly all it takes.
