A historical breed still considered rare even in his home country of Japan, the Kai Ken was advanced as a large game hunter of deer and wild boar in the province of Kai at the Honshu Island, a place surrounded by mountains as a result geographically isolated. Because of such, the breed wasn’t identified in Japan till 1934. Courageous but mild and loyal, the Kai Ken is esteemed as a family companion in the United States. The United Kennel Club identified Kai Ken as a member of the Northern Breed Group in 1997. The USA Kennel Club continues to include the Kai Ken in its Foundation Stock Service throughout the breed’s further development.

The Kai Ken is a professional hunter, committed companion, and truthful watchdog. Although the breed is quite reserved amongst strangers, he’s friendly with his human family and different dogs. The Kai Ken is intelligent, keen to learn during training, and continually willing to please his human associate.
The Kai Ken is a clean dog, his double, medium-length coat only requiring occasional brushing and bathing. He’ll blow his coat twice a year; during that period, more frequent brushing and bathing are necessary. Other regular upkeep includes nail trimming, ear cleaning, and enamel brushing. This fairly lively breed also needs everyday physical and mental activity, including free walking and playtime in a big fenced backyard or being taken on numerous walks. Indoor sports, including hide-and-seek video games, retrieving balls, or learning new hints, will also help keep the Kai Ken entertained. Provided his exercising and attention needs are met, the Kai Ken is a loving, mild family companion.
