Attentive, defensive, and trustworthy, the Maremma Sheepdog is a dedicated, brave cattle and property guard. He prospers on having a task to do and consequently isn’t endorsed for sole use as a pet. The affectionate Maremma Sheepdog is perceptive and steadfast towards his master, forming a close bond with his human family. The Maremma Sheepdog is ideal tempered, provided he has a task to hold him occupied and is proper training given and closely socialized from puppyhood.
The Maremma Sheepdog’s dense undercoat sheds two times a year, usually in the spring and fall, during which more frequent brushing and bathing can be necessary. Otherwise, regular grooming, along with nail trimming, ear cleaning, and enamel brushing, is all it takes to maintain the breed looking is best. The Maremma Sheepdog needs mild exercise, including leashed walks or free play in a big fenced yard each day. The Maremma Sheepdog may be housetrained quickly; however, more effort is needed at the trainer’s end for obedience training for this independently working breed.
