Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer’s most undersized and most famous Schnauzers originated in the late 1800s as a small farm canine in Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is the only terrier which is not originated from European Isle breeds. The breed started by blending the Standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher (and likely Poodle) to produce a smaller dog more adept at defending the house and farm from rodents. All the Schnauzers get their name from one individual canine named Schnauzer, who lived around 1879—an apt name, as Schnauzer means trim beard. The foremost recorded Miniature Schnauzer was in 1888. The Miniature Schnauzer was identified as a breed different from the Standard Schnauzer through 1899 in Germany. The AKC identified the Miniature (once known as Wirehaired Pinschers) in 1926. Nowadays, most Miniature Schnauzers can be traced back to a single canine named Dorem Display, born in 1945. The Miniature Schnauzer is the only Schnauzer in the Terrier Group in America. In England, they join different Schnauzers in the Utility Group. The Miniature Schnauzer came to USA long after their Standard and Giant counterparts. However, in the years after World War II, they far outpaced them in popularity, subsequently rising to become the third most famous breed in USA at one time. The Miniature Schnauzer is a perennial favorite, a smart-looking and alert family pet.
