The Pharaoh Hound is one of the numerous breeds with a valid declaration of the most-ancient breed and appears to have modified little in the last 3,000 years. The species bears an uncanny resemblance to the jackal god Anubis and puppies depicted at the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs, and later, puppies featured in ancient Greek art. Phoenician traders may also have brought the puppies from Greece and North Africa to the islands of Malta and Gozo, where they have become secluded from the rest of the world. Here they flourished as rabbit puppies or Kelb-tal Fenek. The Pharaoh Hound at present is the National Dog of Malta. In the 1960s, the breed was rediscovered and imported to England and later the USA. The AKC identified it in 1983.

The svelte Pharaoh Hound adds graciousness to the home. However, although calm indoors, this breed likes to run. The canine is sensitive, loving, gentle, and good with youngsters training different dogs. However, as mentioned in the breed’s hunting history, it could chase strange animals. The canine tends to be reserved with strangers; a few are even timid. The breed is independent, however, inclined to please, and has the specific feature of “blushing” when excited, with the nose and ears turning a rosy color
The Pharaoh Hound relishes the chance to stretch and run in a secure area, even though the canine can manage with long everyday walks on a leash and occasional sprints. The pup enjoys and wishes for soft bedding and warmth. The coat is low maintenance, requiring only occasional brushing to get rid of dead hair.
