“The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (pronounced peh-KEN-oo) is the small kind of 3 Portuguese Podengo breeds, the other being the Medio and Grande. Their ancestors have been introduced by the historic Romans and Phoenicians to the Iberian Peninsula over 2,000 years ago. Different sized puppies steadily have become specialized to hunt distinctive sized prey, with the most miniature puppies searching a small game for their peasant owners. Although the authentic puppies had smooth coats, perfect in Portugal’s wet north, wiry coats flourished in hot, dry southern Portugal, where brambles have been particularly abundant. “Podengo” has been used as a minimum for the reason that the sixteenth century meant any pack hunting dog.
Initially, The puppies hunted collectively using their sense of scent, then hearing, to find and flush mini animals from dense undergrowth and crevices. They are said to use their listening to hone in by calling each other with a single yip (referred to as the Maticar). Podengos have been adept at protecting from rodents, and they accompanied Portuguese ships — probably spreading them to different ports. One of the 10 National Dogs of Portugal is the Podengo . They are considered an essential part of the Portuguese people’s survival through the centuries and are nevertheless extensively famous there today. In 1995, The first smooth Pequeno got here to the US and the primary twine in 2001.”

Pequenos are active, independent puppies that like to explore. While they’re affectionate, they do not lap puppies, who prefer adventure to cuddle. As with most primitive breeds, they aren’t very obedient puppies. However, they do aim to please. They are frequently pleasant toward strangers, graining, different puppies, and usually, different pets. They are often alert puppies who locate strangers or visitors and bark in response.
Podengos are active, little puppies and want a great stroll or jog daily, plus a chance to run and explore weekly. Given an adequate workout, they’re often well-mannered companions of the household, however, relaxation isn’t always their favorite thing. They have a tendency to experience activities like agility. The Podengo usually has a rustic look, so trimming isn’t needed. Even the wire coat desires the only weekly brushing. Long hairs across the eyes, mainly in the corners, have to be gently plucked.
