“The Rat Terrier’s ancestors likely included Manchester Terriers, Old English White Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, and Bull Terriers. Working-class British immigrants introduced mixes of those breeds to America in the late 1800s. Rat Terriers had been used for defending houses and farms from rodents. Rat Terriers were famous farm puppies by the early 1900s–they were possibly among the most famous puppies in America. They were kept by President Theodore Roosevelt in the White House. The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a short-legged offshoot of the Rat Terrier. Midwestern farmers combined Rat Terriers with Whippets and Italian Greyhounds.
In the early 1900s to increase speed to defend the farm’s crops better. They had been combined with Beagles in the South for higher scenting ability. The Rat Terrier is mostly a loyal and active companion, very playful, and constantly on a quest for amusement and adventure. They’re generally keen to please and learn fast while training; however, does have a stubborn streak and may become easily bored and distracted. They are pretty reserved with strangers. The hound of their history can occasionally make them friendlier toward different puppies than most terriers, and most get along well—however, they often won’t backtrack from a challenge. They may be suitable with cats if well socialized with them; however, introductions to small pets are ill-advised. Most Rat Terriers aren’t excessive barkers.
Rat Terriers have a tendency to be very lively and playful dog. An everyday stroll around the block, coupled with many play sessions will assist meet their workout needs. Indoor games and tricks can offer mental workouts on inclement days. With exercise, they’re a relaxed member of the household. Their skinny coat and small length make them liable to chilling. Coat care is minimal.
