Stalin Inaugurates Special Veterinary Complex for Community Dogs

Special Veterinary Complex

The Tamil Nadu state Chief Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, has virtually opened a Special Veterinary Complex in Ranipet. This has been a great move towards animal welfare services, especially concerning community dogs. The plant is the first of its kind in the state, where they raise and breed community dogs.

A Major Boost for Animal Welfare in Ranipet

The newly launched Special Veterinary Complex in Ranipet aims to strengthen sterilization, vaccination, and post-operative care for community dogs. The project will implement an organized animal birth control (ABC) system to address the growing community dog population and improve overall population health.

Key Features of the Special Veterinary Complex

The veterinary complex covers four acres and has up-to-date infrastructure to facilitate the all-around care of the animals.

Key facilities include:

  • Clinical laboratory
  • Special diagnosis room
  • Well-furnished operating room.
  • Vaccination room
  • Waiting hall
  • Medical instrument storage
  • Chemical analysis unit
  • Veterinarian, livestock inspector, and staff cabins.

Focus on Sterilization and Vaccination

Sterilization surgery and vaccination for community dogs are some of the major activities to be carried out by the Special Veterinary Complex, Ranipet.

Highlights of the program:

  • Sterilization operations in the complex.
  • Accommodation and food provision after surgery for dogs.
  • Priority will be the villages and small towns where there is less awareness of the use of animal birth control.
  • Community dogs that need to be sterilized and vaccinated can be reported by the residents.

Operational Details

  • Working hours: 8 a.m. -5 p.m., and on Sundays.
  • Staffing: 2+ doctors and four attendants per day.
  • Capacity: Minimum of 10 sterilization cases per day.
  • Coverage per year: Almost 2,400 dogs annually.

Addressing the Growing Community Dog Population

Currently, Ranipet district is equipped with:

  • Over 25,000 community dogs
  • Approximately 3,860 pet dogs

Veterinary hospitals in Walajah and Kaveripakkam currently handle only 25–30 sterilization cases per day, while the district records 5–7 dog bite incidents daily. The officials think that the new complex will go a long way in filling the gap in the ABC process.

Future Plans

After the already available veterinary hospital in the town of Ranipet is converted into a polyclinic, the area covered by the community dogs will go even higher. The collaboration between the District Animal Welfare Officer and the civic authorities will result in more effective identification and control of the community dogs in the villages and small towns.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Special Veterinary Complex in Ranipet reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to animal welfare, public health, and responsible community dog management. This project will have both the long-term advantages of the human control of the dog population and provide both pets and the residents with improved services and security.
