Pet of the Week: Meet Alonzo

Adopt Alonzo

Adopt Alonzo – he is a newer arrival at Dane County Humane Society. This two-month-old Chihuahua mix came to Madison from Alabama after an overcrowded shelter could no longer handle new animals. At just four pounds, he ranks among the smallest residents in the shelter. His playful energy and curious personality make him irresistible.

Alonzo arrived in Madison with seven brothers and sisters. Most of them already found loving homes. Now, only Alonzo and one brother still wait for families of their own. The story of Adopt Alonzo highlights how shelter partnerships save lives by moving animals from overwhelmed facilities to places where they stand a better chance of adoption.

Like many Chihuahua mixes, Alonzo is alive, loving, and full of character. At barely a size for a few inches, this little fellow beams with all the ego of his supposed gigantic size; I am sure he can win over any human who is willing to cherish his presence through time. Adoptive families should prepare for an explosion of energy and abundant cuddling and nap times.

Since he is still very young, Pet of the Week: Meet Alonzo shows us a playful puppy who loves teething toys and interactive games. He will surely need training, including crate training, leash walking, and house-breaking, until he grows into a well-mannered companion. Generally, Chihuahuas respond better when rewarded or praised for good behavior because they thrive on attention and encouragement.

Though full of playful energy, Alonzo is also very loyal to those he considers family. Chihuahuas are known for imitating loyalty and enjoy being around their owners all the time. Because of his small size, families with toddlers should supervise playtime to ensure gentle handling. The Dane County Humane Society is dedicated to helping pets like Alonzo find loving families.

The shelter not only focuses on adoptions but also provides rehabilitation, animal care, and educational programs that encourage responsible pet ownership. So, when someone adopts from this shelter, they not only change the life of one pet – like Alonzo – but also contribute to meaningful community causes.

Relocation from overstocked shelters in the South helps reduce pet overpopulation. Many southern shelters face constant overcrowding due to warmer climates, limited spay-neuter programs, and higher stray populations. Rescue groups that move dogs like Alonzo to Wisconsin give them a better chance at adoption and ease the burden on southern shelters.

Creating a home for one more animal means offering safety, love, and care. Adopting Alonzo opens space for another dog in need. Bringing him into a family creates lasting joy, both for Alonzo and the people who welcome him. With the right environment, this puppy will grow into a loyal companion, filling each day with affection and trust.
