Diwali Safety is essential during the festival of lights. While we enjoy colourful rangolis, glowing diyas, and fireworks, innocent street dogs often suffer from fear and stress caused by loud crackers. This Diwali, let’s spread love, show compassion, and make every paw feel safe.
Whereas we savor the sound of crackers, the dogs that wander have a different experience. Any loud noises can cause them to shiver, get scared, and frantically look for a safe hiding spot. Some go on to run on the busy roads, some hide beneath the vehicles, and some spend the whole night trembling with fear.
They don’t have a home to go back to however, they deserve love, safety, and kindness. Let’s ensure that this Diwali, our festivals make everyone happy and not afraid.
Here are 7 simple ways to protect stray dogs and other street animals this Diwali.
Stray dogs have extremely sensitive hearing abilities. Firecrackers make sudden loud noises that can cause great stress, anxiety, and panic. Do not crack next to places where street dogs sleep, eat, or congregate. Keep in mind, it’s minutes of fun for us, hours of fear for them.
If you happen to come across stray dogs that are scared, take them to a secure and quiet corner. An open parking lot with a shaded corner or out of the way, where there is no firework activity, would go a long way.
The loud noise and activity of Diwali may disturb the regular food and water sources for your street animals. Store some food and keep some potable water safely in a corner. One meal or a cup of water will make a difference to an animal having a tough night’s sleep.
In this event, the dog may be frightened and act strangely, even if the animal is kind. Do not chase, touch, or push an animal out of the hiding place. Give these animals space and be gentle with them in their own time. Sometimes, “showing up” is the kindest thing you can do.
Electric wires, candles, diyas, and leftover fireworks decorate homes during the Diwali festival and can pose a threat to curious street animals.
Make sure you:
Even with your best efforts, things can still go wrong. If your dog has been hurt by firecrackers or has burns, then please contact a local animal rescue organisation or vet. Don’t try any random home remedies for serious injuries. You could be saving a precious life!
To all your friends, family, and neighbours!. Teach children that animals have feelings too and experience pain, fear, and sadness just like us. Help spread the message on social media to inspire others to be kind and have a safe, quiet Diwali.
Diwali is not only about lighting lamps, decorating our houses or bursting crackers. Diwali is also about sharing love, happiness, and hope.
Street dogs may not have the voice to ask us to turn the music off. They cannot express their fear or ask us for the love, care, and protection they desperately need. But we can hear what they’re not saying, see the fear in their eyes, and do something.
This Diwali, let us fill their lives not with fire, but with kindness. Fill their lives not with fear, but with food and shelter. Fill their lives not with the noise of crackers, but with the thought that every life deserves to be safe.
The true beauty of Diwali lies not in the loudest fireworks, but in the kindness and compassion we share with every living soul.
Share the love. Don’t share the fear. Ensure all paws feel safe this Diwali.
