Doctors in Kalyan saved an old stray dog’s life by taking out a 1.5 kg tumor

In a heartening development in Kalyan, a team of dedicated doctors has bestowed a new lease on life to an elderly stray dog by successfully removing a sizable 1.5 kg tumor from its back.

The intricate surgical procedure, lasting over two hours, was skillfully performed by three compassionate doctors. Nilesh Bhanage, an avid animal lover and the founder of PAWS, shared his unique experience, noting that in his extensive history of rescuing dogs with tumors, this particular case marked the first encounter with such a substantial growth.

The 8-year-old canine, identified by Bhanage as Squirtel, had endured a challenging period where its health had severely deteriorated, causing a significant decline in its appetite. Prompt intervention became imperative when concerned residents of Kalyan notified Bhanage about the distressing condition of the dog.

Veterinarian Bhanage quickly transported Squirtel to his animal hospital in Murbad taluka of Thane District for treatment. Given the dog’s advanced age and the size of the tumor, conventional anesthesia was deemed unsuitable. To address this challenge, Bhanage arranged for gas anesthesia from Pune, and together with Dr. Vinay Bhagat and two other skilled doctors, they performed a successful surgery on Friday.

The removal of the imposing tumor has brought about a remarkable transformation in Squirtel’s well-being. Having almost ceased eating due to the tumor, the dog is now experiencing a notable improvement in its health, with a renewed appetite and vigor.
