A 16-year-old city boy is getting a Bal Puraskar award because he loves stray animals.

Guwahati, Assam – In a heartwarming story of dedication and love, 16-year-old Saiyam Mazumder from Pandu locality has been conferred with the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, 2024, for his extraordinary work in rescuing and caring for stray animals. Saiyam, the only awardee from Assam this year, stands out amongst the 19 exceptional children recognized for their outstanding achievements.

Saiyam’s journey began in 2017, fueled by a deep empathy for the plight of strays on the city streets. Since then, he has tirelessly rescued over 1,000 stray dogs and an astounding 800 snakes, providing them with medical care, shelter, and food. His unwavering commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. Saiyam, along with three other children, received the Bal Puraskar in the “social service” category from the President himself at a ceremony held in New Delhi.

“It feels amazing to be recognized for something I’m so passionate about,” shared Saiyam, his voice brimming with excitement. “Seeing an injured animal recover and find a loving home motivates me to keep going.”

Saiyam’s dedication goes beyond individual rescues. He actively raises awareness about animal welfare, educating his community about responsible pet ownership and the importance of compassion for strays. He even collaborates with local shelters and NGOs, amplifying their efforts and mobilizing volunteers.
