Border Collies Rescued From Florida Hoarding Case

One of the saddest cases of animal hoarding in Florida was brought to an end with some relief as 36 Border Collies have been successfully rescued. The dogs had been living in horrific conditions and were discovered in a Palm City home that was filled with feces, urine, trash, and neglect. As a result of the rescue efforts, the 36 dogs have now been safely relocated to Treasure Coast Humane Society.

A Shocking Discovery Inside the Home

The case came to light when the authorities got a warrant to search the premises of an address in Palm City, Florida. While the exterior of the house looked quite neat, the interiors of the property were very different.

Border Collies had been discovered by Animal Services Officers in such an overcrowded and unsanitary environment that the smell and the contaminated condition were so bad that the rescue team had to wear Tyvek suits in order to get the dogs out of there.

Paige O’Donnell, a woman aged 62, has been arrested following the investigation. She is facing 72 charges, which include 36 felony charges of animal cruelty and 36 misdemeanor charges regarding failure to give proper care, exercise, and ventilation for the dogs.

Rescue Marks the Beginning of Recovery

After the rescue, all the Border Collies were placed under the care of Treasure Coast Humane Society. The veterinarians started assessing the dogs, giving them medical attention, washing them, and grooming their heavily matted fur.

The shelter staff gave out an emotional report revealing that the dogs have not only undergone a physical change. Following their grooming under light anesthesia, most of the Border Collies exhibited playfulness and loving behavior. This is a good sign showing that they have started to build trust towards people.

The Treasure Coast Humane Society commended the dogs for being incredibly resilient. They revealed that they feel honored watching the Border Collies recover and learn how to be dogs once again.
