In an alarming case of growing violence against street animals, a street dog was brutally attacked in Sector 38 of Chandigarh. The dog had reportedly intervened in a fight between people inside a grocery shop. The incident occurred last week and left the animal seriously injured.
The dog required 13 stitches, but quick and timely medical attention helped save its eyesight.
The incident has triggered outrage among animal lovers across the city. It has also raised serious concerns about how society treats community animals and the lack of empathy shown toward their well-being.
The owner of the shop, Lakshya, claimed that the incident began as a quarrel between two clients regarding the unavailability of one of the foodstuffs. The argument then turned into a physical fight inside the shop and then to the corridor outside.
The shopkeeper started to bark, and one of the shopkeeper’s dogs, which normally sleeps in the street outside the store and is continually fed by the shopkeeper, began to bark. The reaction of the dog was apparently a response to the loud sounds and violent actions. It is possible that the dog was attempting to de-escalate the situation or protect the home environment that the dog was used to.
One of the men who fought and two of his associates directed their aggressiveness at the dog rather than the other way.
The men assaulted the animal using a metal rod, which caused serious injuries to the area around the left eye because of the anger that the men had towards the dog.
Critical facts of the attack are as follows:
The attack shocked the victims and left the people in the area, including shopkeepers, shocked.
Animal welfare activist Simran Bani noticed the injured dog after passersby informed her about the incident. She immediately reached the scene to help the animal. She then used the dog to visit a personal veterinary hospital in Sector 24.
Because of the timely medical intervention:
Her response was quite rapid and, therefore, prevented irrevocable damage
Although no one filed a formal complaint, the police took preventive action after reviewing the grocery store’s CCTV footage.
Police response included:
The animal rightists have insisted on the stricter enforcement of the animal protection legislation in the streets and harsher punitive actions against the manifestation of such sadism.
The incident serves as a moral lesson that animals living in the neighborhood are likely to become the victims of mankind. Indian animal welfare laws also protect street dogs, which implies that they are a constituent of the urban ecosystem, and they require protection and loving care.
Why this incident matters:
It is not merely a case of the dog attacked in Chandigarh, but caring, loving, and co-existence. The dog was just doing as per the instructions, but the human beings decided to be violent. Fortunately, we were able to save the animal because of the timely rescue, and the experience shows that we need to be more attentive to animals that share the common areas and become more responsible and humane.
