Enhance Pet Health-Dog Day Nutrition

Just like children, some dogs can be particular about their food choices. As a pet parent, you understand the crucial role that diet plays in ensuring the well-being of your furry companion. What they consume directly impacts their weight, mood, energy levels, and overall health.

Dr. Dilip Sonune, director of veterinary services at Wiggles, emphasizes that inadequate nutrition can leave your dog feeling lethargic and irritable.

On the occasion of International Dog Day 2022, Dr. Sonune shares tips to help your pet enjoy healthy meals and maintain their energy levels:

Consult a Vet: If your dog is a picky eater, it might be due to an underlying health issue. Schedule a vet check-up to rule out any medical concerns before addressing picky eating habits.

Establish Mealtime Routine: Stick to a consistent feeding schedule without offering snacks in between. If your dog doesn’t eat within 30 minutes, remove the food until the next scheduled mealtime. This helps your dog understand the importance of mealtime.

Experiment with Recipes: Introduce variety in your dog’s meals by trying different recipes. Incorporate toppings like xylitol-free peanut butter or blend vegetables and fruits with meat into smoothies for added nutrition.

Consider Texture and Smell: Dogs have a keen sense of smell, so opt for foods with enticing aromas. Mixing disliked foods with chicken broth or fat can enhance palatability. Additionally, pay attention to texture, as some dogs may prefer softer or crunchier options.

Utilize Appetizers: Offer treats or appetizers like rice with minced vegetables to stimulate your dog’s appetite. While treats shouldn’t replace meals, they can encourage your pet to consume essential nutrients.

Encourage Exercise: Engage your dog in physical activities like walks or playtime before meals to stimulate their appetite. Regular exercise helps alleviate pickiness and promotes overall well-being.

Feed Dog-Specific Foods: Avoid feeding your dog table scraps or human foods that may lack essential nutrients or contain harmful ingredients like onions and garlic. Opt for dog-specific foods tailored to meet their nutritional needs.

Provide Suitable Activities: Cater to your dog’s breed, age, and size by offering suitable activities. For example, provide chew toys for Labradors or engage Border Collies with puzzles and obstacle courses. Experiment with activities like swimming or obedience training to find what excites your pet.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your furry friend enjoys nutritious meals and maintains their vitality on International Dog Day and beyond.
