A five-year-old collie cross named Sadie has finally found a loving home after spending nearly three years in kennels. Staff described Sadie as “Britain’s loneliest dog”. Her story has captured hearts since her rescue in Cornwall. She was found living in unsuitable conditions alongside around 200 other dogs.
The RSPCA rescued Sadie from outdoor compounds where the dogs were being kept in poor conditions. Due to legal proceedings involving her previous owner, she could not be put up for adoption immediately. Even after receiving clearance for rehoming, she spent around 1,000 days waiting for a family to give her a second chance.
With the intention of giving Sadie a forever home, the staff at the RSPCA decided to post videos of her daily through social media. This eventually got Sadie to Mabel Edge, who lives in Westward Ho!, Devon, after the 83rd video was posted.
According to Edge, there was something about Sadie’s sweetness that drew her attention, and she could not believe how long it took for this dog to find an owner. From then on, she started watching videos of Sadie’s progress on a daily basis.
Having been advised by her partner to take Sadie home, the two visited the RSPCA center four times before taking her home.
The couple knew that Sadie would require patience and understanding due to her troubled past. However, they were happily surprised at how soon she started to feel comfortable with them.
While they visited her, they observed that she was gradually opening up and revealing her loving nature. They wanted to ensure that she had a better life away from the kennel.
On the long trip back home, Sadie decided to occupy the floor of their campervan as opposed to the bed that was ready for her. According to Edge, ever since that point, Sadie appeared to have been with them all along.
Sadie’s new owner has been working with a trainer to help her overcome her fears and get settled into her new environment.
Sadie’s case shows the issues that animal welfare groups face. “The RSPCA said increasing numbers of multiple animal cases were putting a strain like never before on its staff.
As stated by the charity, the numbers for 2025 included over 4,200 cases of ten or more animal victims at one address, affecting about 88,000 animals.
These incidents stress the significance of responsible pet ownership, intervention, and animal welfare.

Sadie’s story of moving from her past into a life full of love shows us that rescue dogs need patience and understanding and should be given a chance to trust someone. Even dogs who have been waiting for a family for many years can start a new life.
