Overlooked shelter dogs finally receive love and new beginnings

Dogs cannot talk, but their body does, and stories of overlooked shelter dogs like Brody show how urgently they need attention. Brody is a 5-year-old mix of pit bull, who was found trembling outside a community library as it was freezing. Rescuers have assumed that someone with whom he had trust abandoned him. Similar concern is reflected by data on national shelters. Dog and cat adoption in the U.S. fell a notch lower in 2025, with 1.9 million animals being adopted in the first half of 2025, 1 percent lower than 2024. Large dogs make up:

• 29% of all intakes, but
• Only 26% of all adoptions.

Shelters across the country remain overcrowded, and by the end of the year, 175,000 more animals will enter than leave. Dogs like Brody spend every day confined in a kennel, and each day feels even longer than the one before.

Yet Brody never lost his gentle nature. Torres described him as:

• A very sweet and happy boy
• Friendly with other dogs
• Well-behaved and trained
• Tough enough after almost one year of waiting.

“Many dogs break under such long waits,” she said. “But Brody didn’t.”

Thousands of people shared his story after On A Mission KC shared an emotional Instagram video of Brody standing peacefully in his kennel window with soft, hopeful eyes. The caption was an explanation as to how he still appeared to seek the person who had once trained him a person who never came back.
