Pet-friendly Skies-Akasa Air & Air India

Many pet parents often face the dilemma of canceling vacations or struggling to find pet-friendly accommodations. However, the challenge extends beyond lodging, as traveling with pets can be equally daunting. But fret not, as Akasa Air, India’s new scheduled airline, will soon allow domesticated cats and dogs on board alongside passengers, starting next month.

“Domesticated dogs and cats can travel from November, and bookings for this service will commence from October 15,” shared Belson Coutinho, co-founder and chief marketing and experience officer, as reported by PTI. However, there’s a catch—only small pets weighing up to seven kg will be permitted in the passenger cabin, while heavier animals will travel in the cargo compartment.

If you’re planning to embark on a plane journey with your furry friend, here are some expert tips to ensure a smooth and memorable experience for both of you:

  • Before the journey, have your pet checked by a vet to ensure they are fit for air travel.
  • Ensure that the airline provides a pressurized cabin with a normal temperature and sufficient oxygen for your pet’s comfort.
  • If your pet will be in the cargo, ensure their crate provides ample space for movement, approximately twice their body length, and is secure to prevent escape.
  • Small pets allowed in the cabin may need sedation sourced from your vet to avoid causing disruptions to other passengers.
  • Provide light meals and access to water before travel, especially for pets in cargo (consider using ice cubes in the water tray).
  • Ensure your pet is fully vaccinated, and carry all vaccination certificates. Follow airline protocols and recommendations from your vet.
  • Avoid traveling with short-nosed or brachycephalic breeds like pugs, Shih Tzus, or punch-faced Persian cats in cargo due to their higher risk of respiratory distress.
  • Refrain from traveling with pets with underlying cardiac or respiratory issues.
  • Upon arrival, open your pet’s crate promptly and check their well-being. If any concerns arise, seek immediate veterinary attention after disembarking.
