From being new to competition dog trials in just three years, Declan McGee and his Border Collie, Chip, have made it to represent Ireland in the World Sheepdog Trials. A Remarkable Rise in Sheepdog Trials
Tyrone-born Declan McGee never envisioned that his pastime would see him on the international level. While most people spend their weekends playing football and golf, Declan took to training sheepdogs instead. His hobby soon became his career.
He came into contact with the game through a local sheep dog trial training programme and devoted himself to training diligently. With time and perseverance, Declan and his Border Collie dog, Chip, developed at a fast pace and soon were allowed to compete against the best handlers in Ireland.
Now, the team will represent Ireland in the World Sheepdog Trials. This championship happens once every three years, and it comprises the best teams of sheepdogs from around the world.
The Powerful Bond Between Declan and Chip
However, not only is Chip a competition dog, but he is also an industrious farm dog. Having trained for many nights and weekend sessions, the five-year-old Border Collie learned how to react quickly to whistle and voice commands.
Declan is convinced that the secret of their success lies in trust that goes beyond natural talent. It is a joke for Declan that even though he trains Chip, the latter is teaching him something too.

Sheepdog trials are a sporting event that symbolizes the daily activities done by dogs on farms. The handlers take their dogs for a difficult race in which they have to herd, drive, and pen the sheep.

Declan’s progress is said to be quite uncommon because very few new participants manage to make it onto the Irish team. However, Declan’s humble nature is still the same.
