Zambezi Journey Can Dog Lovers Complete This Brutal Challenge

Dog lovers Kelly Magee, Erica Fox and Ryan Day have undertaken an arduous Zambezi journey spanning 70 miles (110km) and have raised over £10,000 for Immingham Dogs Home in North Lincolnshire.

Kelly Magee, who runs the dogs’ home, along with volunteers Erica Fox and Ryan Day, undertook the adventurous five-day journey where they kayaked, rafted and white-water rafted against harsh winds, waves and currents.

A Five-Day Zambezi Journey Challenge

The journey commenced with two days of navigation in two-man inflatable kayaks, then followed by two days in a six-man raft. The last 17 miles in Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls area were covered by white-water rafting.

Erica found the second day to be very challenging due to the constant headwinds that were creating rough waters on the river. Additionally, Erica found the third and fourth days to be very tough due to the prolapsed discs in her back, which she had only recently discovered.

Day four was filled with adrenaline, as Erica remembered how fast the water moved her raft during the rapids. Her husband Ryan ended up falling into the water two times, while Erica helped him back out.

Wildlife and Nights Under the Stars

Their adventure also brought them closer to the wildlife of Africa. During their adventure, they met crocodiles and hippos in the river.

At night, they slept out in the open air as the safari guard kept watch over the place.

Some memorable moments included:

• Hearing a pride of lions at night
• Elephants getting close to their camp, at about 20 meters
• Seeing five crocodiles, one of which was accompanying them
• Zambezi Animal Welfare Services, a dog shelter in Zambia

Raising Money for Dogs

Despite all the hardships, the trio managed to raise the required amount. The majority of the funds would go towards paying for veterinary bills at Immingham Dogs Home.

It was harder than what Kelly had expected. But seeing the dogs after their visit made everything worth it.

They will also extend assistance to the villagers that they have been to. They will give out Crocs shoes to the kids residing in these villages.
