A brave cocker spaniel named Hero, who works for the blind dog, has impressed many with his outstanding story of recovery after having lost both his eyes due to glaucoma. Scent training has helped him regain his confidence and learn to rely on his keen sense of smell to orientate himself in his surroundings.
At first, the owners of the Clevedon dog from North Somerset, England, Jane Stuart Brown and Rob Grubb, were concerned about how he would adjust to his new life without eyesight. But patience and training have proved effective in the adaptation process.
Hero’s illness first started manifesting itself on New Year’s Eve, when his owners noticed signs of abnormal behavior. In particular, he seemed to be extremely silent, had lost appetite and had difficulties with his eyesight.
Fergus Cronk, a veterinary ophthalmologist at Rowe Eye Clinic in Bradley Stoke, Bristol, found out that the dog had glaucoma. This is a disease associated with excessive pressure in the eye, causing extreme pain and even blindness. After the examination by the veterinarian, it was decided to remove the affected eye.
Some time passed and Hero started showing signs of illness in his other eye. Even after his treatment, his second eye too was surgically removed.
Initially, being blind made Hero feel worried and shy. His owners could see that he did not like being left alone and kept on barking when they went out of his sight.
The training and rehabilitation process of Hero got a tremendous boost when dog trainer Lucy Shipway stepped in. She had been training him ever since he was a puppy.
Hero learned how to recognize certain scents and make use of them while exploring his environment. This training was carried out using various scent-searching tasks, such as finding cloves buried under gravel and finding scented cloth behind obstacles.
Slowly but steadily, Hero gained confidence and started enjoying his favorite activities again.
Hero’s development was marvelous to observe, especially with respect to his return to old habits while being blind.
The owners of Hero are astounded at his tenacity. According to Rob Grubb, there was one evening when Hero just disappeared to look for his favourite toy and threw it in their laps as they sat on the couch.
This seemingly trivial act showed that Hero was getting back in touch with his old ways.
Glaucoma is a painful disease of the eye, resulting from an increase in pressure in the eye, caused by inadequate drainage of fluids. Early diagnosis of this condition by veterinarians is recommended, since this condition can cause blindness if left untreated.
However, Hero’s story shows how crucial compassion, expertise, and patience are in assisting animals in coping with disabilities. Despite the changes that he had to face, scent training and the involvement of his family members enabled Hero to regain confidence and live an active life again.
