Lucknow Struggles with Pet Dog Licensing; LMC Plans Stricter Enforcement

Lucknow pet dog licensing issues

LUCKNOW: With the financial year approaching its end, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has fallen short of its 100% pet dog licensing target. Lucknow pet dog licensing issues persist as out of an estimated 10,000 pet dogs, only 4,600 have been licensed—lower than last year’s figure of 5,200.

According to LMC officials, the shortfall is mainly due to low awareness and resistance from pet owners. Many residents are either unaware that licensing is mandatory or deliberately avoid the process. Some even oppose the regulation entirely.

To address this, the LMC has decided to step up enforcement measures. Previously, drives to catch unlicensed dogs were held only on Saturdays, but these will now be conducted on weekdays as well. Additionally, door-to-door inspections are planned to ensure compliance.

“We will soon intensify the drive. Offenders will face a fine of ₹5,000 per unlicensed pet dog,” stated Animal Welfare Officer Dr. Abhinav Verma.

As per LMC regulations, Lucknow pet dog licensing issues arise as pet dog licenses are issued only after submission of proof of rabies vaccination and an affidavit confirming compliance with the Dog Control Bylaws of 2003. The licensing fees are ₹1,000 for foreign breeds and ₹200 for Indian breeds.
