Reflective collars for stray dogs are helping save countless lives on India’s roads. Every day, millions of stray dogs cross busy roads alongside fast-moving vehicles, and nighttime accidents remain a major threat.
In India, one small initiative from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, has an effective solution to the problem of stray dogs: reflective (radium) collars.
Using this particular collar, the light gets reflected from the body of the dog, making it visible from a greater distance on the road. Through this, the driver has more time to apply his brakes and change lanes, thus avoiding any accident that would have harmed both the animal and the driver.
That is what makes this whole movement so impressive; rather than waiting for something big that would take time and effort from the government, local volunteers decided to take matters into their own hands and get to work. They are tracking down stray dogs, putting reflective collars on them, and getting residents involved in the process.
It has also motivated locals to participate in a manner that makes an impact. People are now coming forward to support the drive by:
Road safety is normally considered from the human perspective; however, animals are as much at risk. Thousands of stray dogs fall victim to road accidents in India, mainly at night due to reduced visibility.
A reflective collar can be used as a very inexpensive yet effective way to save dogs from the dangers of such accidents.
But more importantly, this initiative reminds us that real change can start from the smallest act of kindness. Although the price of a reflective collar is insignificant–a few rupees- for a stray dog who tries to cross the road at night, it can become the difference between life and death.
“A reflective collar is a matter of life and death for a stray dog who tries to cross the road at night.”
With an increase in the number of such campaigns run by cities, animal welfare organisations, schools, residents’ associations, and other volunteers, reflective collar campaigns can become one of the most significant and affordable solutions to improve the lives of stray dogs in India.
Every single reflective collar is not only about safety but also an indication of compassion, responsibility, and coexistence. Our volunteers are bringing change by making stray dogs more visible at night.
We, the Indian Kennel Club, believe that it is our duty to make sure that all dogs are safe and are treated with respect. Community-level projects play a key role in bringing about such a compassionate society that can coexist with humans. We can make roads safer for all Indian lives that travel them, together.
