A missing cat from West Sussex survived six days under a shipping container, having been knocked over by a vehicle. Ronnie, a one-and-a-half-year-old British Shorthair that went missing on 28 June, was finally found by a pet detective along with a detection dog, after being unsuccessfully located via GPS tracking equipment.
Feeling all hope lost, Langridge turned to the UK-based Pet Detectives, a team of specialists in the search for lost animals headed by Colin Butcher. Joining him in the hunt was a special cat detection dog named Molly, who has been searching for lost pets for many years.
It took about two hours of searching on 11 July before Molly caught the scent of Ronnie beneath the container. Even then, the task wasn’t over. The rescue team spent another two hours waiting until the terrified cat finally crawled out of its hideout.
Butcher stated that what made this search successful was the incredible nose of Molly. He added that after seven years of cooperation and over 500 rescued cats, Molly was responsible for every single one of them.
Post-rescue, Ronnie was taken to an emergency vet clinic where some injuries were discovered during examinations. The diagnoses included:
Luckily, the operation was a success, and now Ronnie has a chance to recover and is currently recovering at home.
For the family, the day that Ronnie was discovered had even more meaning. It just happened to be the anniversary of Justine Langridge’s marriage.
She said that Ronnie coming back home was the greatest anniversary present that she had ever had, considering the week that she had been going through.
The case also brings to light the challenges associated with finding lost animals. While GPS devices and AirTags may be helpful in various circumstances, they may not be effective where there is interference with signals due to metallic obstacles. Detection dogs become extremely helpful in such instances since they use their acute sense of smell.
The rescue of Ronnie highlights the exceptional ability that dog detection teams have in case traditional means of finding a pet fail. It is also proof of the importance of patience and dogs’ skills when it comes to transforming a tragic experience into a joyful one. The story of Ronnie serves as a hope to other people who have been victims of such attacks.
